Our faculty change lives
Our faculty are at the heart of our reputation and global impact. A well-supported faculty will amplify Berkeley’s singular ability to address urgent societal and environmental issues through cutting-edge research, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and teaching that prepares students to face the future with knowledge, imagination, and critical judgment.
Our faculty change lives, and the best way to serve students is to have more faculty in classrooms. With smaller class sizes, Arts & Humanities professors can work closely with students. But while the number of undergraduates at Berkeley has increased by 7,500 since 2006, the number of full-time faculty has remained at around 1,500.
New resources are urgently needed to support our world-class faculty. To continue leading critical dialogues and cultivating the next generation of leaders, our faculty need adequate funding as well as support for research and scholarly exchange.
Your investment in faculty now will secure Berkeley’s future for decades to come.
Gifts at work
Fellowships and research funding
Fellowships and research funding provide our professors with precious support, helping them stay at the forefront of their fields and fostering innovative interdisciplinary collaborations that amplify Berkeley’s global stature.
Early career support
Early career support gives junior faculty precious opportunities to conduct research at a time when their careers are just beginning to take off, helping rising stars make their mark on their field and helping Berkeley retain talented scholars.
Competitive salaries
Competitive salaries Berkeley competes with the top private universities around the globe for faculty, but with a fraction of the resources available. To maintain the depth of knowledge — across languages, areas, and eras — that is foundational for our distinctive brand of inclusive education and bold scholarship, we need funding for new positions and ensuring competitive salaries. Competitive salaries allow us to bring top scholars to Berkeley... and into classrooms where they can inspire students, shape their intellectual and professional trajectories, and change lives.
Structured mentorship
Structured mentorship to support an equitable experience for all faculty.
Strategic hiring
A&H’s strategic hiring and retention plan is designed to ensure accessible and inclusive excellence by:
- Addressing gaps in research and instruction, particularly those that reflect historical biases.
- Sustaining excellence, especially in the study of earlier periods and areas where there is a risk of field-loss.
- Anticipating new areas of research and art where Berkeley is poised to become the best in class.
