Since joining Berkeley's faculty in the Department of Film & Media last year, Professor Nicole Starosielski has been busy guiding and conducting research with her undergraduate students in a effort to both further research on sustainable internet practices and to help train the next generation of specialists on Sustainable Subsea Networks.

Supported by a division-awarded Mellon Project Grant "A Global Public Humanities Project to Green the Internet," has made significant progress over the summer. Recently, two of Starosielski's undergraduate students, Ella Herbert and Michael Brand, traveled to Singapore to present their research in collaboration with Hesham Youseff from Telecom Egypt at the Submarine Networks World conference.

Talking about her work, Ella said, “I will be presenting on the uses and problems of the application of PUE in Cable Landing Stations...We are [also] part of a global team of students and young professionals working to help generate research, awareness, and insight that will contribute to a sustainable future”

Sebastian Johnson-Deal, a graduate of Berkeley’s Film & Media program, is creating a film to communicate the students' research to a broader audience and accompanied the students to Singapore to document their work.
