The Division of Arts & Humanities is delighted to share that two of our esteemed faculty members—Solmaz Sharif (English) and Kim Shelton (Ancient Greek & Roman Studies)—were honored at the 2024/25 College of Letters & Science Faculty Awards Ceremony, held on May 14 at the Alumni House.
Both faculty were nominated by Dean Sara Guyer and selected by the L&S Faculty Awards Working Group, a committee of the L&S Advisory Board composed of friends and alumni of the College. Dean Guyer had the privilege of presenting the awards to Professors Sharif and Shelton at the ceremony.
Solmaz Sharif was named a 2024 co-recipient of the David Blackwell Award, which recognizes recently tenured faculty who exemplify the College’s highest aspirations in scholarship, teaching, and service, and who serve as an inspiration to the campus community. The award honors the legacy of David Blackwell, the first African American tenured professor at UC Berkeley and a renowned statistician and mentor.
Kim Shelton was recognized as a 2024 co-recipient of the Beatriz Manz Award, which celebrates recently promoted faculty whose work embodies excellence across scholarship, teaching, and contributions to the public good. The award is named for Professor Beatriz Manz, a pioneering Latina scholar and advocate for human rights and social justice, who led the Department of Ethnic Studies and the Center for Latin American Studies.
These awards carry $5,000 in research funding and underscore the deep impact that Professors Sharif and Shelton continue to make through their research, teaching, and mentorship. Please join us in congratulating them on this meaningful recognition.
