Eleni Berg is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores themes of nature, immigration, consumerism, and indigeneity.

Berg spoke with UC Berkeley writer Alexander Rony at a recent open studio event for MFA (master’s in fine arts) students. At the time, Berg was hosting a workshop where visitors were sculpting clay filled with native seeds.

Meet Marcus Romundset, a UC Berkeley student combining his passions for computer science, business, and Scandinavian culture. As part of the team led by Professor Timothy Tangherlini, Marcus is analyzing historical cookbooks to map the evolution of Scandinavian cuisine through flavor networks.

Organized through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarships, the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP) has introduced countless students to cutting-edge research across all disciplines on Berkeley’s campus. URAP matches undergraduates with faculty members who train them in the skills needed to collaborate on their projects. Faculty and researchers across arts and humanities disciplines have participated in URAP since its founding and continue to mentor students as they become new members of our vibrant research community.

Nicole Daena Leon Loya, a Berkeley transfer student from San Joaquin Delta College, has managed to balance numerous responsibilities while pursuing her educational goals. Loya brings a wealth of experience and a deep love for languages and education to Berkeley. Before coming to UC Berkeley, she worked full-time as a Spanish teacher. “I have been an assistant teacher at an Elementary Montessori school teaching Spanish since 2021 and I love the environment and their philosophy on teaching.”

Ozzie Jauregui is a transfer student who studied drama and business at Modesto Junior College before transferring to UC Berkeley. “I transferred as an English major, that way I could be involved with the arts and entertainment, to get my foot in the door.” 

​​Recalling his past educational experience, Bradley Pultz recognizes his growth as a student. “I had a pretty large gap between high school and college.” After high school, “I was not the most exemplary student, I struggled with many classes, I barely passed high school. I did not think I was going to go to college.” After enrolling in courses at his community college, Pultz successfully resumed his educational path to Berkeley.

This Thursday through Sunday, UC Berkeley’s Department of Theater, Dance and Performance Studies will present Marisela Treviño Orta’s The River Bride.  

In the play, set in a small Brazilian fishing village, a mysterious man is fished from the Amazon River three days before a wedding. Brazilian folklore and lyrical storytelling blend to share a tale of true love, regret, transformation and two sisters who struggle to stay true to each other, while staying true to themselves.

Berkeley Professor Nicole Starosielski is leading the way in subsea cable network sustainability while also empowering the next generation to take the lead.

While many people may think satellites are responsible for telecommunications as we know it, the global subsea cable network actually carries more than 99% of the internet traffic between continents. Because of their marginal carbon footprint, subsea cables have often been excluded from internet sustainability studies, yet they have the most potential for providing sustainable communications infrastructure.

Tell me about yourself and what languages you speak.
I am a third year Political Science major and I speak Spanish and English. Spanish is my first language and then I started speaking English once I started grade school. I also just completed my first year of Italian here at Berkeley.

It’s almost unheard of for a first-year college student to curate an exhibition at a prestigious art institution. Yet, on a recent December afternoon, three new undergraduates at UC Berkeley — Raena Chan, Emma Cusimano and Caitlyn Liao — guided visitors around Five Tables of Art & Climate Change, a one-day pop-up show they helped curate at the campus’s Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA).

I am a double major in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures and Political Science and I speak Arabic, English and a little bit of Turkish. I took Turkish at Berkeley.

I’m a senior with a double major in Film and Media Studies and Philosophy and I’m a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese. I also speak English and Cantonese Chinese, the latter of which I’ve been taking over the years here at Berkeley. I’m also on the Division of Arts & Humanities Dean's Leadership Team.

I am a double major in Political Science and South and Southeast Asian Studies with a minor in Political Policy. I currently speak English, Tagalog, and American Sign Language, and I'm currently learning Burmese.

I studied economics and computer science in my undergrad at Berkeley and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in my graduate studies at Berkeley. I speak English, Turkish, Chinese, and Italian. And, I can speak Spanish and a little bit of German, though I’m definitely a beginner.
